Dannion Brinkley  -   The Twilight Brigade

Dannion Brinkley is  the author of the international bestsellers, Saved by the Light ,At Peace in the Light  and The Secrets of the Light.  Made into a television motion picture, Saved by the Light has been seen in over 30 countries. 

He is loved and respected worldwide for his inspirational lectures on the Near-Death Experience, Palliative and Hospice Care, Complementary and Alternative Healing Practices, and Self-Awareness. Since 1977, Dannion has worked diligently, looking for the best way to integrate conventional and complimentary medicine. Having survived numerous brushes with death, Dannion is an expert in the dying process, He was struck twice by lightning and has since survived heart failure, open-heart surgery, ruptured subdural hematomas, brain surgery, and a massive grand mal seizure. 

That first lightning strike radically changed his life. Dannion became a hospice and nursing home volunteer. In the past 28 years of volunteer service, he has been at the bedside of over 350 people at the point of death, and more than 1200 during their final days, accruing more than 20,000 hours of service. 

As a member of the National Institutes of Health’s ad hoc committee, he assisted in research and preparation of The Chantilly Report and the foundation of the Office of Alternative Medicine in 1992. 

Dannion is co-founder of The Twilight Brigade / Compassion in Action (CIA), an international organization that recruits, trains, and places volunteers, with the goal of providing companionship during the last months of life. With more than 76 million Baby Boomers now confronting the mortality of their relatives and friends many of whom are Veterans, this program is providing a much-needed link to assure quality in end-of-life care.

u      In May 2007, Dannion was presented with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in our nation’s Veteran’s Hospitals

u      August 2007 Dannion received the Cherished Heroes Award from the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Auxiliary

u      July of 2007 brought the Director’s Special Service Award for outstanding volunteer service which recognized the contributions of The Twilight Brigade.

u       May 2007 Dannion received the VAVS Outstanding Silver Merit Award for recognition of 12,500 hours at the bedside of hospitalized veterans.

                            OTHER AWARDS AND EVENTS OF INTEREST

   In October 1999, Dannion Brinkley and Ira Byock testified in support of improved end-of-life care before the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee on Government Reform. 

   Dannion has presented comment multiple times before the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medical Policy and the National Institutes for Health. Among which are his presentations in October 2000, ”Improving End of Life care with Complementary and Alternative Medicines”, July 2001, ”You Cannot Drug A Child to Safety: Ways of Reducing Stress in America” and December 2001, ”Prayer; The Ultimate Complementary Healing Tool”. 

   In October 2000, Dannion Brinkley participated in the meeting on The Science and Spirituality of Healing. This very special meeting was co-sponsored by Duke University Medical Center/Duke Clinical Research Institute, the Duke and Wake Forest Divinity Schools, the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Lawrence S. Rockefeller and the Rockefeller Family Foundation, and Wake Forest University/Bowman Gray Medical Center. 

   In 2000, The Twilight Brigade / Compassion In Action was recognized by the United Nations as an outstanding volunteer organization. 

   Oprah Winfrey’s 0 Magazine included in its segment on Volunteerism. In the December 2000 issue, the ongoing contributions of The Twilight Brigade, Compassion in Action 

   On October 11, 2001 Dannion provided testimony ”Describing Death in America” to the National Cancer Advisory Board for the Institute of Medicine. 

   The NATIONAL HOSPICE and PALLIATIVE CARE ASSOCIATIONS’ Heart of Hospice Award nominated Dannion for its highest honor in 2001. 

   Dannion has also supplied support in the story compilation of Chicken Soup for the Veteran’s Soul. His contribution was used to improve awareness of the needs of our veteran community. 

   In February 2003, at the annual meeting of the World Health Organization, Dannion, keynote speaker, co-presented with George Bush, Sr., a lifetime achievement award to Dr. James Pittman in Dallas, Texas. 

   In August 2003, Dannion was honored with a Courage and Valor award by the National Foundation For Women Legislators, for 25 years of volunteerism and advocating for improved end-of-life care; and for recruiting and training more than 5,000 volunteers who serve our nation’s veterans through the national non- profit organization, The Twilight Brigade, Compassion In Action 

   Dannion has been credited with initiating the insertion of more than one million dollars in the 2004 Defense Appropriations Bill, to further the study of Complimentary and Alternative End-of-Life Care for Vets. 

   As a board member of Volunteers for Inter-America Development Assistance (VIDA), an organization in Central and South America, Dannion promotes prenatal and natal care, as well as orphanage development and support. 

   In March of 2004, Dannion became the proud recipient of The Wisdom Media Group’s Wisdom Worldview Award given to those individuals and corporations who have made a significant contribution to the bettering of humanity. Dannion award stated his loyalty and friendship to the Turner family as well as his dedication to the Veteran’s of the United States of America. 

   In May of 2005, Dannion received the Silver Merit award from the VA for contributing more than 10,000 hours at the bedside of hospitalized veterans.

In 2006, Dannion was nominated for the VA's Special Secretary's Award for outstanding service to American veterans.

This amazing story and the resulting insights have earned Dannion appearances on Oprah, Larry King Live, CNN World News, Unsolved Mysteries, the BBC, and many other international television and radio shows, including Art Bell, Allan Handelman and George Noory’s Coast to Coast AM. 

   Dannion travels extensively, lecturing around the world to spellbound audiences. During his time off Dannion lives between his homes in South Carolina and Nevada, where he dedicates himself to a busy and rewarding family life with his wife, Kathryn Peters-Brinkley, and six beautiful children.
